Basically, this diet revolves around you eating eggs or 1/2 can of black beans at your meal. So if you eat 3 meals, one of those things needs to be at each of those meals. The Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet has been around for decades under a variety of names, including the Sacred Heart Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Cleveland Clinic Diet, and the Spokane Heart Diet. Although no institution lays claim to being its source, the details of this meal plan have been widely circulated and, in some instances, even recommended by medical professionals. There are claims that users can lose up to 10 lbs in a week by following the steps described here.

However, dieters are cautioned to consult their medical advisers before using this diet.

Diet

The main component of the plan is vegetable SOUP. You are required to make a pot of soup with the ingredients described here. You can have as much of the soup as you like over a period of seven days, along with a few other items that are mentioned below.

SOUP CONTENTS:

* One or two cans of stewed tomatoes.
* One large can of beef broth (without fat)
* Three or more large green onions
* One packet/can of chicken noodle soup (similar to Lipton Soup mix)

* Two green peppers
* Two pounds of carrots
* Two cans of green beans

Seasoning: Pepper, salt, parsley, curry, bouillon, and Worcestershire sauce are permitted.

Process: Cut the vegetables into bite-sized pieces and cover with water. Boil on high for ten minutes, then simmer until the veggies are tender.

The soup can be eaten at any time you are feeling hungry, in any quantities. It does not add calories.

DRINKS:

* Tea, including herbal teas
* Coffee
* Skimmed milk
* Cranberry juice
* Plenty of water. Eight glasses per day recommended.

EXCLUSIONS:

No alcohol during the seven days of the diet. Allow at least half a day after finishing it before consuming any alcohol.
No bread
No carbonated drinks, such as sodas
No fried foods

DAILY PLAN

Day 1: Eat any fruit except bananas. Watermelon and Cantaloupes are recommended as they have fewer calories than most other fruits. Food today consists of fruit and soup only.

Day 2: Eat plenty of veggies today, whether cooked, raw or canned. Green leafy veggies are preferred. Try to avoid corn, peas and dry beans. No fruits today. As much soup as you want. At dinnertime, a baked potato with butter is allowed as a treat.

Day 3: No baked potato today but have all the soup, fruit and vegetables you can manage.

Progress Report: If you haven't cheated, you will probably find that you are about 5 lbs lighter at this stage. If you find that your bowel movements have changed, eat a cup of bran or other high fiber food.

Day 4: Eat at least 3 bananas and drink as much skim milk as you want. Also be sure to have at least one serving of the soup. Your body now needs the potassium, carbohydrates, proteins and calcium contained in the bananas and skim milk.

Day 5: Eat 10 to 20 oz of beef (or non-fried, skinless chicken) and up to 6 tomatoes, as well as at least one serving of soup.

Day 6: Eat beef (or non-fried, skinless chicken) and veggies - as much as you like, especially green leafy veggies. At least one serving of soup.

Day 7: Have plenty of soup. Brown rice, veggies and unsweetened fruit juice allowed. Cooked veggies may be added to your rice, if you like.

Broiled fish may be substituted for the beef on one day.

Progress Report: By this stage, at least 10 lbs of weight should have been lost.

Stay off the diet for two days before starting it again.

Although this diet has more merit than most short-term diets in that it pays closer attention to nutritional requirements during the seven days it is to be followed, the restrictions mean that it can become boring, which increases the temptations to eat snack food or binge on fatty foods. The drink is best made fresh each time that you want to drink it but this sometimes isn't possible, especially if you are heading off to work. To try and maintain the cleaning power of the lemon enzymes, make a concentrate of the maple syrup and the lemon juice and just add water when you want to drink it.

**TIP**

So if you were planning on drinking 3 drinks whilst you were out, you would need to make up a concentrate of 6 tablespoons of lemon juice and 6 tablespoons of maple syrup.

To make life easier on yourself, take 3 separate bottles of water each containing 8 fl Oz's of pure water but with the capacity for 10 fl Oz's as you will be adding your concentrate to it.

You'll need to pack a tablespoon for measuring and your cayenne to add at the end. (you can add 3/10ths of a teaspoon of cayenne to the concentrate but cayenne tends to get hotter when it hits liquid and is left for a period of time).

Once you're ready for a drink, just get your concentrate out and give it a good shake, then measure 4 tablespoons into the bottle, add your cayenne, shake and drink!

**Tip**

If hunger creeps in just distract yourself. I decided to detox my house whilst I detoxed my body. There is nothing quite like cleaning to keep you focused and distracted. My house had never looked so good by the time I had finished my detox and of course it helps when you get so much more energy than you normally have.

If you don't have a house to clean try some light exercise as this will make you feel great and keep your mind off food. Don't forget to keep drinking the detox drink and replenishing your water supplies.

Strive for whole grains, also known as complex carbohydrates, over refined grains (things made with white flour or sugar). They're better for you, help maintain your blood sugar stable and will make you feel fuller.

Alcohol should also be avoided because it can cause blood sugar fluctuations.

A Diet With More Meals

Ideally, a diet for low thyroid function will include small meals spread out through the day rather than three big meals. If you eat five or six small meals it will help balance the slow metabolism that is part of hypothyroidism. Just remember, keep these meals around 300 calories each, and include exercise if you want to lose weight, too.

Some doctors recommend the Zone diet to those with hypothyroid. The why behind the system is somewhat complicated, but it has to do with balancing out your insulin reaction to food, limiting the spikes and crashes you probably feel right now. Carbs are a big part of this diet, particularly those refined grains we were just talking about.

The diet calls for drinking lots of water (a good idea for anyone), eating more fruit and vegetables and less pasta, bread and starches, and a small amount of lean protein through the day. Most of your carbs should come from fruit and vegetables, with other starches used sparingly. You also should not go more than five hours between meals.

Thyroid Brain Connection - Why Hypothyroid and Hashimoto's Biggest Problem Is Brain Degeneration

People come in to my West Los Angeles Thyroid Institute every day with symptoms suggestive of a hypothyroid condition. It shocks me that these patients have very little understanding of the thyroid-brain connection. People think about low energy, thinning hair, and weight gain as the primary evils of hypothyroidism. One very common symptom is brain fog, these are the people who say "Dr. Beckingham I can't remember things like where my keys are, why can't I focus, I forget people names". I have to educate these people that the weight and energy issues are valid but my real concern is the neuroendocrine component of low thyroid function, as well as the blood sugar issues. The blood sugar issue is for another story. I want to focus on the Brain and nervous system for now.

It has been clearly demonstrated that thyroid hormones exhibit very powerful microglia modulating properties. Microglia are a type of glial cell that are the resident macrophages of the brain and spinal cord, and thus act as the first and main form of active immune defense in the central nervous system (CNS). Microglia constitute 20% of the total glial cell population within the brain and spinal cord. Each neuron in the brain can have around 10 glial cells to work with it. Basically microglia kill bad things that should not be in the brain. Some studies go on to imply that excessive microglial reactions in the brain are associated with the lesions of neurodegenerative diseases. So brain degeneration is linked to excessive immune response in the brain.

I give patients the easy to understand example of a pimple. In a common pimple on the body the bacteria and oil present cause a noticeable immune response. The pimple becomes inflamed, red and tender to the touch. The same principle holds true in most immune reactions. So immune reaction in the brain causes inflammation in the brain tissue. It is this inflammation that causes damage. Clearly stated inflammation in the brain slows down the brain by blocking nerve conduction (communication) hence the brain fog. Microglia reaction causes inflammation that over prolonged periods causes brain damage.

If thyroid hormones help to regulate the brain immune response and keep in it check what happens if your thyroid does not work properly, brain degeneration! Thyroid hormones have been shown to promote neurogenesis (new cell growth), dendretic/axonal growth (the communication end pieces of nerve fibers), myelinnation (the insulation of a nerve), and synaptogenisis (the building of communication points of the brain). Thyroid hormones help promote serotonin reception which in turn activates the frontal cortex of the brain. So low thyroid could cause depression, lack of motivation, bowell issues, and poor coordination. How many thyroid patients have we seen with this presentation?

As we dig deeper it has been shown that T3 hormone (the active thyroid hormone) works hand in hand with acetylcholine and low T3 will result in poor brain function causing brain degeneration in particular the cerebellum (balance center, fear/pleasure response, posture control, coordination). So bad cerebellum function equals poor movement with balance problems. On top of that the things in life patients used to enjoy they do not anymore, I see this in my clinics all of the time.

Low thyroid function hurts memory by slowing hippocampus function by damaging glutamate receptor activity which also causes low dopamine levels. If you have low dopamine you are likely to get Parkinson's disease. When I see my Parkinson's patient's they have been mismanaged because they have been diagnosed far too late. Parkinson's for me functionally speaking has 8 stages with #1 being loss of smell, #2 loss of proper gut movement, all the way to #8 shaking of the body. A true text book diagnosis does not happen until stage 8, extremity shaking. My goal is to catch it early and modulate the Parkisonian reaction before too much damage is done. This is a whole other story.

The worst part of all of this is the previously mentioned brain neurotransmitters; Serotonin, Dopamine, and acetylcholine all play a role in helping the thyroid gland work. This causes a vicious cycle. Bad thyroid causes bad brain function which in turn causes worse thyroid. This is why just giving patients thyroid hormones without a full lab workup and brain assessment is borderline negligent practice. Remember most thyroid problems in the first place are autoimmune and the thyroid is just a victim of the body attacking itself.

To find out if you have an autoimmune disease I insist on antibody testing on all my chronic condition patients. An antibody is a protein marker. The body's immune system produces antibodies in response to unwanted material like molds, virus, bacteria, and parasites. These substances are labeled antigens. Antibodies can be produced when the body has a reaction to a food it is sensitive to or comes in contact with a harmful chemical. Antibodies can mistakenly be produced against a bodies own healthy tissue when the immune system becomes confused. The antibody marks the tissue for removal and signals the immune response. This is the cause of autoimmune reactions. I like to check for gluten antibodies, myelin (fatty sheath around the nerves) antibodies, cerebellar (back part of the brain controlling balance, coordinated movement, and spinal muscles) antibodies.More examples of this could be antibodies to skin tissue often called psoriasis, antibodies to the thyroid tissue called Hashimoto's disease, or antibodies to the nerve cells conductive coating known as multiple sclerosis.

In summation we have to focus on the whole patient not just one system, we have to look at the whole symptom presentation, we have to do full lab testing panels including antibodies, and we have to do a full neurotransmitter assessment. Educate our patients and help give them control over the condition without it controlling them.

When hypothyroidism begins, several things happen, usually gradually. The first is lack of energy and ambition. You just seem to lose desire for activities you've enjoyed in the past. You feel unusually tired and apathetic, but can't figure out why. You begin to crave carbs and begin to snack regularly. This is your body's way of trying to stay awake. You'll try not to give into it, and when you can't fight the cravings, you set yourself up for horrible eating habits and weight gain that are difficult to reverse. You might already be taking some thyroid supplements, but they're obviously not enough. I have been a hypothyroid sufferer for 30 years. I was originally diagnosed by an old-fashioned European doctor. He was a gem. Then I had to switch to a modern, young South African doctor with a large and fragile ego, who knew nothing about thyroid glands but based everything on blood tests, which he didn't really understand. As a person with hypothyroidism, it is hard to get any respect from the medical community. General practitioners and endocrinologists alike seem to know and care little about people suffering from hypothyroidism. Their "gold standard" is the TSH test, and most of them use the old standards of readings between .6 and 6 instead of the new readings of .3 and 3 that the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists adopted in 2003. These new readings allow more people (it's mostly women, particularly those who are middle-aged, who suffer from hypothyroidism) to be diagnosed and treated. Too bad the professionals that we trust to look after our health don't seem to know or care that the standards have changed. Endocrinologists, by and large, specialize in diabetes. This is where their primary interest seems to lie. The first endocrinologist I was referred to told me that she doubted I'd ever been hypothyroid and that my thyroid gland was habituated to being overstimulated. She was so wrong! Then I was referred to another endocrinologist who misdiagnosed my thyroid virus for Grave's Disease (overactive thyroid.) The medication she prescribed raised my TSH to about 22. When I stopped taking that medication, my TSH dropped to 4.7. She told me my 4.7 TSH reading was now normal. It clearly wasn't normal for me because I still had hypothyroid symptoms. Consider that normal or average clothing sizes could be between 6 and 14, and that you fall into this category. How many of these sizes will fit? If a size 10 fits you, why would you wear a size 14? TSH is much like that. You have to find the number that fits YOU. When you have been told for the nth time that your TSH is in the normal range, read these symptoms, most of which are commonly known, but some of which aren't.

Hypothyroid

1. Fatigue. This is not the same as tired. This refers to falling asleep at work, during conversations, as soon as you get into a vehicle. You can't stay awake. You need at least 10 hours sleep at night, but within a couple of hours of waking up, you begin to battle to stay awake. You nod off during conversations, which you can't focus on anyway. You avoid socializing in the evening because you can't stay awake.
2. Sluggishness. You move slowly physically, but even your brain is slow. Your thought processes don't work properly.
3. Increased sensitivity to cold. Summer's not too bad, but in the winter, there is no way to get warm or stay warm. You wear extra layers and surround yourself with space heaters. It helps, but you're still cold.
4. Constipation. You drink lots of water and eat next to nothing, but your body processes everything slowly. Constipation follows.
5. Pale, dry skin. Skin color is pasty-looking, and skin is always dry, no matter what kind of lotion you use. My heels were so rough that every day they chewed through my socks even though I filed the roughness away daily and used foot balm.
6. A puffy face.
7. Hoarse voice. Your voice takes on a gravel-like quality at times.
8. Elevated cholesterol level.
9. Weight gain that makes no sense. You're too tired to eat, but gain weight anyway.
10. Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness. Flexibility and mobility are gone. You move like a lead weight. If you crouch or kneel, you can hardly get up again, and it hurts to crouch or kneel anyway. Even bending down is difficult and painful, for instance, trying to reach for something you dropped under a desk.
11. Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints. Or all of them. Any sprain you've had begins to hurt again. Hips, fingers, ankles ache and don't bend properly and contribute to your moving like a lead weight.
12. Muscle weakness. You can barely walk. Walking is slow and tiring. When I brushed my teeth, I had to put my arm down and rest at least 2 to 3 times to finish brushing my teeth. You fall into chairs as opposed to sitting down, and it's a struggle to get back into a standing position from sitting. Getting out of a car is difficult, and getting into a pickup truck a little higher off the ground is equally difficult.
13. Heavier than normal menstrual periods. By now I don't have those any more, but when I did, I all but hemorrhaged for at least four days out of the seven or eight that my period lasted. I had to put plastic on my mattress because I would wake up during the night having bled through and past the tampon, and leave a blood trail down the hall to the bathroom. Wasn't fun.
14. Brittle fingernails and hair. Hair is dry, brittle and unhealthy looking. Nails can't be grown long without breaking.
15. Depression. No need to elaborate.
16. Muscle cramps. You develop cramps in muscles from head to foot. Fingers, forearms, back, abdomen, legs. These cramps happen numerous times during the day and for no logical reason. My arms, hands and fingers cramped up when I cut up meat to eat.
17. Hair loss. It's not just the hair on your head, although that thins out a lot. It also affects pubic hair and underarm hair. That can all but vanish. Eyebrows also fall out, particularly the outside corners.
18. Sinus infections. You have recurring sinus infections even though you have never had a history of sinus problems.
19. Snoring. You begin to snore even though you've never had a snoring problem in the past.
20. Craving for carbohydrates. You begin to crave chips, chocolate, candy, baked goods and anything with sugar. Your body is trying to stay awake and carbohydrates provide quick energy. Doesn't help with keeping the weight down either.
21. Irritability. Little things set you off and enrage you. Everything becomes personal and you get angry enough to want to physically harm the offender.
22. Edema. You retain water. You look puffy and blubbery, particularly in the abdominal area. Makes you short of breath when you exert yourself - even going for a walk can leave you breathless.
23. Forgetfulness. You become sharp as a bowling ball. You try to commit something to memory, but your brain is a sieve.
24. Slow heart rate. Your resting pulse can drop below 60 beats per minute.
25. Low body temperature. My temperature was consistently between 35.8 to 36.2 C, which also explains why you feel cold.
26. Painful intercourse. Having sex hurts, and add to that, you wind up with muscle cramps from the waist down.
27. Light sensitivity. Your eyes can become unusually sensitive to sunlight.

My advice? Shop around for a doctor who is willing to learn together with you about thyroid problems. General Practitioners are generally more reasonable to deal with because they have no learned bias where thyroid is concerned. My GP told me the 4.7 was too high and told me to take 50 mcg of thyroid supplement. I took 100 mcg. My TSH dropped to 1.9. She was happy with that but I wasn't. I still didn't feel right, and remember that only YOU know how you should feel. Remember what I said about the clothing sizes? I took another 25 mcg and the TSH dropped to .5. She used the standard of .4 to 4, so she was still happy and I was too. I finally felt normal again. Don't let doctors bully you into believing that diet, exercise and/or antidepressants will cure what ails you when you know that isn't the problem.
